PART OF THE NORTHERN ZONE OF CONIFEROUS FORESTS Finland sits in a cold climatic zone with cold winters and warm summers. Trees only grow during the warm growing season. Compared with southern forests, the growing season is short through- out Finland: 175–185 days in Southern Finland and 105–175 days in other parts of the country. Thanks to their slow and seasonal growth, Finnish coniferous trees make excellent sawn timber. Their straight, round trunks grow symmetrically. The growth rings are narrow, and the trunks have a straight grain, with consistent density in the different parts of the trunk. These qualities increase the strength and durability of sawn timber, in addition to reducing cracking and tearing when processing the wood. In Finland, the annual growth of the forest exceeds the number of fellings. In part, the rapid growth of wood is the result of active forest management.

SEVEN EFFICIENT SAWMILLS We are Finland’s largest producer of sawn timber. Our sawmills are located in the coniferous forest areas where trees grow rapidly and the transportation distances for wood raw material are short.

SPRUCE

The trunk has a long knotless section. It can be used to pro- duce surface and side boards that have no knots or a low level of knots. The knots are small in diame- ter, left by branches that have grown at a right angle to the trunk. The resin is evenly distributed in the wood material. It pro- tects the wood in humid and hot climates. The wood is easy to plane. The butt log has a higher den- sity than the top log. Boards and side boards made of butt logs are strong. Pine has a high degree of heartwood with good proper- ties. Heartwood is naturally rot-resistant and weather- proof. Pine is suitable for the man- ufacture of window frames, doors, door frames and furniture, to name just a few examples.

The trunk usually has a long section with a low level of knots. The colour of healthy knots does not differ much from the colour of the surrounding wood material. The surface of boards and panels made of healthy spruce is evenly light-coloured. The wood has a straight grain, which does not rise during grinding or planing. The sapwood only passes a small amount of water. Boards sawn from sapwood are, due to their durability, an excellent material for facades.
